Worst Courses to Study in Nigeria
1. Crop Science
Crop Science is one of the worst courses to study in Nigeria. This course provides graduates with little or no job opportunities.
Nigeria is a nation blessed with great space of land for both commercial and subsistence agriculture, but poor leadership has never made room that all these natural resources are utilized and as such leaving crop science graduates with no place to express their intelligence.
Crop Science is however less lucrative when compared with other lucrative courses.
Most Crop Science graduates face the mountain challenge of being unemployed after studies because there are no openings in the Nigerian labor market.
It is difficult to find a job for a crop scientist in Nigeria because it is a very difficult occurrence.
2. Anthropology
Anthropology is among the worst courses to study in Nigeria.
Anthropology is the systematic study of human societies with the goal of understanding our evolutionary origins, our distinctiveness as a species, and the great diversity in our forms of social existence across the world and through time.
This discipline has little or no value in the Nigerian economy.
In the Nigerian labor market, graduates of Anthropology find it hard to secure a good job as it appears to be of no relevance in Nigeria. The employment rate is drastically poor.
3. Horticulture
Horticulture is a branch of plant agriculture that deals with garden crops, generally fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants.
Despite the fact that agriculture is a lucrative profession, horticulture, one of the branches of agriculture, should not be studied in our Nigerian economy because there are no job opportunities for it, it is also not lucrative and has low prospects in the Nigerian labor market.
Horticulture, or the study and cultivation of ornamental plants, is thus among the worst courses to study in Nigeria.
Graduates of Horticulture find it tough to find work because companies in Nigeria hardly employ horticulturists unless they intend to start their own flower businesses.
4. Sociology
Sociology is a beautiful course to study in developed countries, not in third-world nations, however it is in the list of the worst courses to study in Nigeria.
Sociology is not a lucrative field to study and thrive in Nigeria because the employment rate is poor and uninspiring.
After graduating, the majority of Sociology graduates are either underemployed or unemployed. In other developed countries, after studying Sociology, one could become a social worker, but not in Nigeria.
5. Zoology
Zoology is a branch of biology that studies the members of the animal kingdom and animal life generally. In the western world, Zoology is a lucrative course, and graduates in this field are greatly sought after.
Studying zoology in Nigeria is a poor choice to make. I doubt any right-thinking Nigerian would select this course in a Nigerian university, however, some universities have turned this field of discipline into a dumping ground, students only study it because it was offered to them by the university.
You can reject the offer although, instead of studying zoology and stay long before getting a job.
6. Early childhood education
This is another course that has not been given relevance in Nigeria. Early childhood education comprises of activities and experiences that are intended to effect developmental changes in children before their entrance into elementary school.
7. Botany
Botany is the scientific study of plants and how plants function, what they look like, how they are related to each other, the places they grow, how people make use of plants, and how plants evolved.
Given that the nation leadership system has failed to give essence to education and learning, this has however made job opportunities very rare for persons who graduated from this field of discipline.
8. Music
Music is a talent and not what one should bother studying in a Nigerian university.
Most of the top Nigerian musicians are not music graduate, however, before one should start music career, there are a few things one need to improve on, such as; speech, tone, and diction.
Also, if one wants to become a keyboardist or pianist, one can take a short course to learn them. Hence, music graduates may not be favored for work-related activities in Nigeria
9. Political Science
Political science is that aspect of social sciences that studies the state, politics, and government.
Political Science deals intensively and extensively with the analysis of political systems, the theoretical and practical applications to politics, and the examination of political behavior.
In Nigeria, not all politicians studied politics before venturing into it. Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra state studied philosophy and went on to bag another degree in Economics.
However, this practising politics without studying politics makes it appear irrelevant studying philosophy. It makes political science stand as one of the worst courses to study.
10. Physical education
This course perhaps sounds interesting as it involves assisting people with arriving at their fitness objectives notwithstanding, getting a job with this degree can take you years, except in the western world where it is well valued.
One may suppose that as a graduate in this field, one will work in the ministry of sports or the Nigeria football federation.
Of course, things can pan out well for some people in these places, but in all honesty, to be employed here in Nigeria, it is either the person is a medical personnel or media personnel.
Getting a job as a physical education graduate is could be hell in Nigeria, which makes it one of the worst courses to study in Nigerian university.
11. Library Science
It’s completely witless to study library science in Nigeria especially now that most schools’ libraries are filled with outdated books and people can search and read books on the internet.
12. Home Economics
Unless one desires to be a classroom teacher. Sometimes, it can be difficult to get a teaching job if one doesn’t have a B.edu in home economics. So think about it thoroughly before accepting the admission offer.
13. Archeology
14. History
15. Classical studies
Conclusion on Worst Courses to Study in Nigeria
The Nigerian system does not muchly give much relevance to courses people study in the course of recruitment.
Also, poor development and establishment of the working sector based on the courses people studied is outrightly the problem facing the nation.
Hence this made some fields of endeavors become worst to study.
The essence of education is to acquire knowledge and earn a living with such knowledge. but Nigeria has failed in helping to meet up with the latter.
