How to do Change of Course in Nigerian Universities

Change of course is among the common thing freshly admitted students in the tertiary institution go for after finding out that the course they found themselves in is not what they can carry on with.

Although, some students go on with studying the courses they are given because they do not have the knowledge of the manner in which they will go on to do the needed change of course.

Nevertheless, this article will go on to explain and expose how students can go about doing change of course if they find themselves studying a course they do not want in Nigerian Universities.

How to do Change of Course in Nigerian Universities

Changing course after admission is always tasking, tedious, difficult, and time consuming.

Many Nigerian Universities make provision for admitted students who want to change from their current courses to another within the first two years of their admission into the university.

This process is however not easy. There are some criteria one must know before drifting into this change of course.

First, one must be sure that his/her institution of studies gives room for a change of course.

Also, the procedure to follow must be clear to the student. However, rules can vary from University to University.

CHANGE OF COURSE IS ONLY PERMITTED WITHIN THE SAME FACULTY

Change of Course can only be permitted when it is within the same faculty. Although this rule can vary from one university to another.

For example, a student in his or her first year is in Philosophy department which is under faculty of arts.

The student can be granted change of course if and only if the application is to switch to courses like Literature in English department, History department, Linguistic department, and many more which is found in the same faculty.

When a change of course is granted in the same faculty the higher chances of the student adapting fast to their new course is certain because they share almost the same academic scope.

A GOOD CGPA IS REQUIRED

For a change of course, to be successful, the student’s Cumulative Grade point Average must be high enough to meet with the criteria required by the school.

For example, A university may require the student to attain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.5 from an overall point of 5 in order to move to another course in his/her second year.

This Particular criterion has remained one of the reasons many in the Nigerian university who desire a change of course have not gone about applying.

OTHER ALTERNATIVES

Going for another JAMB exam is quite an alternative for patient students.

Change the institution and courses entirely through inter-university transfer admission.

Complete your current course then go for Direct Entry and study your preferred course. Again one can complete your first degree, then go for another in your preferred course.

Another route for change of course is completing your first degree then go for a master’s in your preferred course.

CONCLUSION

Changing course at Nigerian University is as difficult and frustrating as anything. But an ambitious one who knows what he or she is after can overlook all the pains and go for one’s dream.
